Wire articles and just-the-facts reporting is a cornerstone of a heathy press. Another cornerstone is the expression of opinion, and interpreting events, sometimes colorfully so. We have developed algorithms that rank articles according to how likely they are to contain expressions of opinion, and then attempt to determine whether the article is on balance positive or negative. For example, the use of certain profanities or obscenities you might imagine are reliable indicators of negative opinion. In actuality, we use a much more extensive set of indicators, and dig into the language of the article, but the idea is the same.
This widget uses our opinion and spin scoring algorithms to pull interesting articles from the last few days of news, and then determines the most prominent people mentioned in each article. You can sort them either by the strength and nature of the opinion, by how recent the articles are, or by the name of the person. In short, a quick and easy way to see who is having a bad news day.
