Barack Hussein Obama, Jr., a Democrat, is the junior Senator from Illinois (map). He is the only African-American currently serving in the U.S. Senate, the fifth in U.S. history and the third since Reconstruction. As of February, 2008, he was in a neck-and-neck race for the Democratic presidential nomination with Senator Hillary Clinton.
